About
Us
Let
us introduce Nechako Lodge & Aviation and the Doerig family
to you.
We
moved to Canada in the early 80's, bringing with us a wealth of
experience in the hospitality business and a love for the wilderness
of British Columbia. Joe grew up working in his parent's restaurant
in eastern Switzerland. Together we were determined to someday
have our own business, where we could combine his love of flying
with our desire to share the splendor and wealth of nature with
our guests.
Nechako
Lodge was built as a hunting lodge in the late 60's at a then
inaccessible location on Knewstubb Lake near Kenney Dam. Over
the years the lodge saw a number of owners and operators come
and go and had become quite run down in the process. We purchased
the lodge in 1987 and since then have enjoyed making improvements
and adding new services to create a thriving business for ourselves
and our sons Martin and Thomas.
Our
love and respect for the environment, together with concerns for
the sustainability of backcountry tourism, have prompted us to
become very active in local land and resource planning.
This
is why we are also members of a number of industry associations
including BC Fishing Resorts and Outfitters Association, the BC
Wilderness Tourism Association, and the Heart of BC Tourism Association.
Because
we depend on healthy ecosystems, we are always striving to reduce
ecological impacts created by our own operation. We produce our
own electricity with a state of the art power system and with
the addition of a wind generator, we have drastically reduced
diesel consumption and generator hours. Every effort is also made
to curb noise and air pollution, because it detracts from the
wilderness atmosphere we love.
We
also work hard to eliminate vehicle traffic around buildings to
a minimum. Hot water and heat for the main lodge is produced by
an outdoor wood furnace, fuelled by drift wood we can gather off
the lakeshore and by those beetle killed pine trees, which we
could not cut into lumber for building projects.
You
have our assurance that we will provide you with the highest quality
facilities and services possible and that we will do our very
best to make your stay with us a pleasurable and memorable experience.
Our
mission: Put a smile on every guest's face before they leave.
